Artist's Comments

This is an appropriation of Frida Kahlo's "Self Portrait with Thorn Necklace and Humming Bird"

The doll in my appropriation represents the modern women.

All creatures and objects that I painted here contain symbolic meanings and the whole painting is actually lightly divided into half. Right side of the painting. Shows how women present themselves infront of people, regardless if they are sad or unhappy, and the left side is what they are actually undergoing. This explains why the right side of the background is full of fresh blooming flowers and gradually became dried and withers sunflowers towards the left of the painting.

The spider necklace - symbolize female and growth. The necklace is hurting the doll so much that her skin bleeds, shows how painful it is to be a female and how painful is the process of growing up.despite of the pain, the doll still put on her everlasting smile, with only her right blue eye in tears, but the left blue eye without, to shows that they are controlling their tears in front of people when they are actually crying inside.

Cat - an animal that closely related to females. They like to attract attentions and to be cared and loved by people, and so do women. On the surface women seems to be loved by men and men seems to understand them as well. However, the truth wasn't like that. What women need more than love is communication. They need an ear that listens and a voice that agree with them. Therefore, at the left side, I painted a parrot a cockatoo.

Cockatoo - as parrot symbolizes communication. Parrot is a kind of bird that will imitate what you say. They listen and they follow which is exactly what the women want, a voice that corresponds to them.

butterflies and dragonflies - represent carefree. However if you look closely, the right butterfly is a real butterfly, whereas the left one is a hair clip. This shows that to other people, women looks carefree, but in reality, it is not true. The right dragonfly is flying freely, while the left dragonfly is only a decoration on the sunflower.

I just love the colors and the great blending of them, that is really nicely done. And the sky with background sun flowers are amazing. She has quite a strange body shape though, but this drawing rocks anyway. Great work!
